    12th Grade Planning Timeline

    All Year

    Students need to continue to achieve at their highest level.
    Students need to maintain a solid, challenging course schedule and strong grades throughout the year. Colleges will be requesting final transcripts (June/July). Acceptances have been reversed in situations where seniors did not maintain the quality of their academic performance. Avoid senioritis!
    Counselors follow up with students based on progress reports, report card status, attendance, etc.
    Counselors will be reviewing student achievement, throughout the year, to determine if they are meeting the necessary graduation requirements.
    Students should keep in touch with their counselor as needed.
    TCCI/Naviance: All students and parents should have a registration code to be able to access this on-line system. If you do not, please contact the Department of School Counseling and Guidance Services. The program can be accessed from home or on computers in the library. Important information related to the Department of Counseling and Guidance Services is available through Naviance. If Students/parents/guardians are not registered, they need to register as soon as possible.
    Students can continue exploring colleges using TCCI/Naviance and other resources available in the library, on the Internet and in the Department of Counseling and Guidance Services. All students have been given a registration code to be able to access TCCI/Naviance.
    Students should continue to build on their base of experiences outside the classroom: get involved in some activities that are a major commitment (i.e. clubs, sports, community service, employment,) and feel free to build upon defined interests. Students are encouraged to become involved in leadership positions.
    Students use Naviance to sign up for visits with college representatives.
    Scholarships: Students should regularly check Naviance and the bulletin boards in/outside the Department of Counseling and Guidance Services to learn about available scholarships they can apply for.

    Fall

    College representative visits to MHS: Offered during the school day in the fall. Students are encouraged to sign up to meet with representatives from colleges in which they are interested. Sign up and schedule is available on Naviance.

    September

    Counselors meet with students to review fall testing procedures and application procedures.
    Senior Night: (MHS Auditorium): Students/parents/guardians are encouraged to attend Senior Night for an overview of key details regarding the college application process and meeting deadline dates.
    Student/Parent Brag Sheets and Student Activity Sheets/Résuméare completed and returned to the counselor no later than September 15th. These are important components for the counselor to use when writing letters of recommendations.
    Teacher Recommendations: If they have not already done so, students need to secure two academic teachers who would be willing to write letters of recommendation for them. They might also want to get a letter from a supervisor of an extracurricular/work activity.
    If applicable, students re-take the ACT. (this test is not always offered in September)
    Register for SAT Reasoning or SAT Subject Tests and/or ACT testing as appropriate.
    Students should notify their counselor if they are planning an Early Decision, Early Action or Rolling Application.
    College Applications: Students should start working on college applications if they have not already begun the process.
     
    Those students who are not college-bound need to see their counselors to discuss their post- secondary options/plans.
    Students are encouraged to set up a calendar to record application deadline dates to insure they are organized and meet college requirements.
    Students can begin submitting Transcript Request Forms with appropriate documentation for Early Decision, Early Action or Rolling college deadlines. Be conscious of The Department of Counseling and Guidance Service deadlines for these requests.
    NCAA: Athletes interested in playing for Division I or II collegesshould register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if they have not already done so. Students should see their counselors and coaches to discuss.
    Mini College Fair (MHS Auxiliary Gymnasium): Students can sign up to meet with admission representatives, ask questions and learn more about what colleges have to offer. This is a great way to find out about the colleges.
    CSS Profile: Students applying for financial aid should check with colleges to determine if they will need to fill out the CSS Profile (located on the College Board website). If they need to do this, they can complete the application and send it in as soon as it is ready.

    October

    Students take or re-take SAT Reasoning or Subject Tests, as appropriate.
    If applicable, students re-take the ACT.
    HSPA: Twelfth graders who have not yet passed one or more sections of the HSPA must do so in order to graduate.
    If appropriate, students consult with their counselor to refine their list of college choices. Non college-bound students consult with their counselors to continue discussions regarding post-secondary plans.
    Students make arrangements for interviews, overnight visits and the opportunity to sit in on classes at the college/university/vocational or technical schools to which they have applied.
    Students submit Early Decision, Early Action and Rolling Application Transcript Request Forms to their counselor.
    Bilingual Day (MHS – Saturday): Program focuses on the community services available for bilingual families and emphasizes graduation and school requirements.
    Morris County College Fair (Site: County College of Morris): Students/parents/guardians are encouraged to attend to meet with admission representatives, ask questions and learn more about what colleges have to offer. Information sessions are also available.

    November

    Students take SAT Reasoning or Subject Tests, as appropriate.
    ACT: if applicable, students register for the December ACT.
    Students continue college/career research, visits and interviews.
    Students continue to work on applications.
    Mini College Fair (MHS Auxiliary Gymnasium): Students can sign up to meet with admission representatives, ask questions and learn more about what colleges have to offer. This is a great way to find out about the colleges.
    Students should send First Quarter grades to all colleges, particularly Early Action/Early Decision, and Rolling Admission schools. These grades should shed a positive light on all of your applications. Please check with your counselor to determine if grades should be sent.
    Teacher Recommendations: Students need to follow up with teachers to make sure letters are written and ready to be mailed.
    National Honor Society: Students who qualify by virtue of their GPA are invited to apply and are given the application materials after the first quarter of the senior year.

    December

    Students take the SAT Reasoning or Subject Tests or ACT as appropriate.
    Transcript Request Forms: Students must submit Transcript Request Forms by December 1st for those colleges with January 1st deadlines and by December 15th for those with January 15th deadlines.
    Financial Aid Night (MHS Auditorium): Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend this presentation that reviews the college financial aid process. This is a very important session for anyone planning to apply for financial aid.
    Deferral or Denial Decisions: Students receiving deferral or denial decisions must meet with their counselors to review the other college applications that have been sent. A strategy for follow up on deferrals will be established.

    January

    January (PAC meeting – MHS Library): Naviance Presentation
    Students complete any additional required testing.
    FAFSA: Parents/students complete and submit financial aid forms (FAFSA and/or
    CSS Profile) and any individual college forms required for financial aid requests. Forms should be sent as soon as possible.
    Mid Year Reports: The Department of Counseling and Guidance Services will send mid-year reports to all colleges the student applies to.

    February/March/April

    March: If appropriate, students register for AP exams.
    Students receive decisions from colleges.
    Students who have received Early Decision I and II acceptances complete all appropriate paperwork for colleges. They also notify other colleges about the early decision.
    Students revisit campuses if they are still not sure which college they will choose. If possible, this should include the opportunity to stay overnight and sit in on classes.
    Once a final decision is made, students need to let all colleges know with a “Thank You” note.
    Students complete and submit applications for local scholarships that are awarded at the end of the year.
    April: ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery) (MHS): A career/vocational inventory that students will have the opportunity to sign up for, and take, with no obligation to enlist in the military. Once the inventory is scored, students meet with counselor to discuss results and ideas for possible careers to pursue during post-graduate studies.

    May

    Advanced Placement Exams: Are administered to registered students.
    Students: Enjoy making your final choice for post-secondary high school plans.
    Students working Wait Lists should maintain contact with their counselors in order to consult on strategy and options.

    June

    Students complete Senior Survey.
    Senior Obligations: Students must pay all obligations in order to participate in graduation.
    Senior Awards Night! (MHS)
    Graduation! You made it!
    Final transcripts are mailed to designated school of final choice.
