At Alfred Vail School we pride ourselves in educating our students academically, socially, and emotionally. There are approximately 290 children from culturally diverse backgrounds, enrolled in kindergarten through second grade whom benefit from this charge.

All children have the advantage of learning in a safe, cheerful, and risk free environment supported by positive reinforcement, encouragement and staff understanding growth mindset.  Our well-rounded instructional programs can be described as having strong emphasis on literacy, writing, and math, implementing blended learning in a station rotation model. The instruction is standards based and data driven. In addition we continue to engage the children with valuable programs in character education, music, art, physical education, world language, library, and technology.

We provide bilingual education, English as a second language, an intensive literacy and math intervention program for those students who have been identified as, in need of remediation. We also have a gifted and talented program for those students who have been identified as academically exceptional.

The Language Arts curriculum is a balanced literacy approach which encompasses read alouds, independent reading, guided reading, shared reading, language and morphology, along with reading and writing workshop.  The Everyday Math component is a researched based, acclaimed program, which gives children the opportunity to apply their knowledge of mathematics to everyday life.  Our character education component utilizes our guidance counselor as a hands-on-educator, presenting classroom lessons on anti-bullying, good citizenship and the importance of conflict resolution. Ride with Pride is an initiative that promotes a positive climate on our school buses.  We celebrate the students’ successes with Student of the Month, Pizza with the Principal, and we promote helping others through a program called Random Acts of Kindness.

Alfred Vail has a committed and devoted alliance with our Home School Association.  This partnership has allowed our school to attain additional programs and materials enabling us to carry out our goals in educating the children. Our relationship with our Home School Association clearly demonstrates the importance and power of a school and community partnership.

We are proud of our many accomplishments at Alfred Vail, but as educators we realize our work is never done. There is an understanding that we too are life-long learners as well as our students, and we therefore work towards continuous improvement.  Through professional development, and the formation of Professional Learning Communities, Alfred Vail School promotes, supports, and encourages professional development and academic growth for our staff.

The entire Alfred Vail elementary team is dedicated to working together as we enrich our students; academically, socially, and emotionally, to ensure that all students receive the finest education possible as they strive to learn and become productive members of society.

    Principal,

    Janet Kellman
