    Dear Frelinghuysen Middle School Community,

My name is Matthew Fabricant and I am honored to serve as the incoming House 1 (Phoenix) Supervisor at Frelinghuysen Middle School.  I look forward to meeting everyone in person and learning about every aspect of our school community.

My initial experience in education began shortly after my graduation from Notre Dame (where I won an NCAA championship as part of the fencing team) as a member of the Peace Corps.  Stationed in San Lorenzo, Honduras, (a fishing community on the Pacific Ocean), I taught both computer science and ESL classes to students of all ages and skill levels.  As well, I mentored teachers through informal observation and feedback.  Finally, I developed a new state of the art computer resource center for my students.  It was in the Peace Corps that I fell in love with the transformational effect teaching and education can have on students’ futures.

After the Peace Corps, I returned to the U.S. and accepted a teaching position as a Spanish and ESL teacher at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark. N.J.  At St. Benedict’s I was responsible for the creation and oversight of both the Spanish and ESL curricula.  In addition, I served as the head fencing coach.  At St. Benedict’s, I deepened my understanding of the critical relationship between school culture and student success.

Most recently, over the last six years I have worked as both a Spanish teacher and team leader at North Star Academy Charter School in Newark.  My responsibilities included creating and overseeing the Spanish curricula and guiding a team of 10 teachers and more than 100 students.  While at North Star, I also developed and led a teacher professional development program.  My administrative responsibilities also included implementing school culture initiatives and mentoring specific teachers.  While at North Star, I learned about the importance of using sound instructional practices to improve student achievement.  In the last year, I also earned a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University.

I am very excited to begin this next stage of my career at Frelinghuysen Middle School as a school a leader.  Additionally, I look forward to partnering and communicating with each and every one of you as we work towards the mutual goal of providing the very best Middle School experience possible.  As both a parent and educator, I am fiercely committed to helping all students become academically and socially successful.  We will have opportunities in the near future to meet and share our thinking about your child’s experience as a member of the House of Phoenix.  In the meantime, should you wish to contact me, I can be reached at matthew.fabricant@msdk12.net Thank you in advance for your support and commitment.

    In partnership,

    Matthew Fabricant
