Supplemental Educational Services

The No Child Left Behind Act requires that "supplemental educational services" are offered to students who are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch and who attend schools identified as “Schools in Need of Improvement.” These schools are those in which one or more subcategories of students fail to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress in the same content area(s) (language arts and/or mathematics) for two consecutive years. Supplemental educational services are provided by independent vendors and offered after school, on weekends, and/or during the summer. Eligible families who opt to have their children receive these services must choose a provider from among those approved by the State of New Jersey. These services are provided at no cost to families.

In the Morris School District, special education students at Sussex Avenue School did not meet AYP for the 2008 and 2009 school years. As a result, Sussex Avenue School has been identified as a "School in Need of Improvement" and must offer supplemental educational services as described above. A total of 48 Sussex Avenue students are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch and, therefore, qualify to receive supplemental services. As of March 30, 2010, none of the families of these students have opted to receive these services.

Additional information regarding supplemental educational services and the list of approved providers are available at Sussex Avenue School and on the NJ Department of Education website: www.state.nj.us/education/title1/program/ss.
