High School Social Studies
High school students must
complete three years of social studies education in
order to receive a high school diploma. Students must
successfully complete a one-year course in world history
and a two-year sequence in United States history. Students
who meet prerequisite requirements may also enroll
in a variety of elective courses in social studies
education.
Required course of study: The required course of study
in social studies conforms to the New Jersey Core Curriculum
Content Standards in Social Studies.
Students in grade
nine pursue a required course in world history. Students
study ancient world history in grade eight (ancient
civilizations through the renaissance/reformation)
and modern world history in grade nine (renaissance/reformation
through the modern era).
Students complete a two-year
sequence in United States history in grades ten
and eleven. Students study the colonial era through
civil
war/reconstruction in the first year and civil
war/ reconstruction through the modern era in the second
year.
Elective program: The social studies department offers
seven elective courses to students who meet prerequisite
requirements. These elective courses offer focused
study in the social science disciplines of history,
economics, politics and sociology.
