High
School World Mathematics
High school students must complete three five-credit
courses of mathematics education in order to receive
a high school diploma. Students must successfully complete
a course in Algebra, Geometry, and one other Math course.
Students who meet prerequisite requirements may also
enroll in a variety of higher level mathematics courses
and computer science courses.
Required course of study: The required course of study
in mathematics conforms to the New Jersey Core Curriculum
Content Standards in Mathematics. Typically students
preparing for college will study mathematics in the
following sequence: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry,
Algebra 3/Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus, with selected
students taking Calculus. Students who are at risk
of not passing the New Jersey High School Proficiency
Assessment (HSPA) will be placed in a Plus class which
has a Math Lab component that students take along with
the Algebra or Geometry course to prepare them for
passing the HSPA.
Elective program: The mathematics department offers
Statistics, Discrete Math, SAT Prep, and Computer Science
elective courses to students who meet prerequisite
requirements. These elective courses offer enrichment
in the study of mathematics.
