High
School World Language
High school students must complete two consecutive
years of a world language in order to receive a high
school diploma. Once completed, students may continue
their world language study throughout their four years
at Morristown High School. Courses are offered in French,
German, Italian, Latin and Spanish, from the beginning
levels to Advanced Placement. There is also a program
designed for native speakers of Spanish, which places
emphasis on refining their reading and writing skills
in their native language.
The focus of world language instruction is oral proficiency.
Classes are taught primarily in the target language,
providing students with the opportunity to develop
their skills in oral/aural language. As students continue
their study of language, more complex vocabulary and
grammatical concepts are introduced to increase their
proficiency levels in reading and writing. Students
are introduced to the short story, poetry, literary
selections of various time periods, art, music and
culture of the target language countries.
The world language department takes pride in the fact
that many of our students choose to continue their
language study at the university level, participate
in travel abroad programs, study in foreign universities
and use their knowledge of a second language to advance
themselves in their chosen careers.
