The Board of Education recognizes the benefit of extended year learning opportunities for students with special educational needs. The district may provide summer programs for basic skills improvement, development of English language proficiency (ESL/bilingual), enrichment (gifted and talented), special education, and other program related needs. The Superintendent or his/her designee, in collaboration with district staff, shall develop summer programs in accordance with district objectives, in compliance with state statute and administrative code, and within district financial resources.
The District may provide fee-based enrichment programs. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall establish procedures to ensure equal educational opportunity for all students, fair and consistent application of registration fees and requirements, qualified professional staff, healthy and safe learning environment, and high quality instructional and recreational activities.
The Board of Education shall approve summer programs annually each spring. Once summer programs have been approved and sufficient funds are available, notices shall be distributed to parents of qualified students at parent/teacher conferences, through the mail, and in local newspapers. Whenever possible, notices to limited English proficient students should be in their native language.
The Board of Education will act on summer programs annually.
The Board of Education will accept make-up credits from summer schools in other district only if the appropriate administrator gives prior approval. Parents/guardians shall bear all expenses of out-of-district summer make-up work.
