Complaints Concerning Instructional and Library Materials
If parents or members of the community have questions about specific instructional materials or find certain materials objectionable, a discussion shall ensue with the teacher or librarian who is using the material. If the issue cannot be resolved at the instructional level, the matter shall be discussed with the building principal. If the issue cannot be resolved at the building level, the form, entitled "Public Complaint About Instructional or Library Materials" shall be completed and forwarded to the Superintendent or his/her designee . This action establishes the need for an instructional materials review committee (IMRC) to convene to review the expressed concerns, evaluate alternatives, and develop recommendations.
The Superintendent or his/her designee shall review the recommendations of the IMRC and make a determination. Written notice shall be provided to the individual or group submitting the complaint with copies to the Board of Education.
The decision of the Superintendent or his/her designee may be appealed to the Board of Education. A written appeal must be received by the Board secretary within seven days of receipt of the decision of the Superintendent or his/her designee. The Board of Education will review the issue in closed session and make a decision the next regular meeting.
