The Board of Education recognizes regular, purposeful homework as an essential component of the instructional program and process. Homework is an important factor contributing to the academic achievement of pupils by providing for the reinforcement of learning experiences which occur in the classroom, by extending school activities into the home and community, and by providing a basis for further study and preparation for future class assignments.
The nature and amount of homework should vary by subject area, grade level and individual pupil. In general, it should be assigned with regularity, with recognition of the needs and differences of individual pupils, and with provision for reasonable prompt feedback to the pupil for work completed.
Responsibility for homework should gradually increase for pupils as they advance in grade. Junior school and high school assignments should recognize that more time and individual pupil initiative are required in order to meet increased instructional demands.
Most assignments should be completed in one or two days. Long-range assignments, or special projects, should provide pupils with the opportunity to develop and refine research and independent study skills and the ability to work independently. Teachers should require evidence of progress periodically when pupils are working on long term assignments. However, special assignments over holidays and vacation periods should be avoided.
Pupils absent for any reason must make up assignments, class work and tests within a reasonable length of time. Pupils being excused for field trips, concerts, competitions, etc., must make arrangements with the teachers of the missed classes in order to make up the work missed. This must be done before the absence from class.
Homework shall not be used for punitive reasons.
