CLASS SIZE

The Board of Education believes that enrollment composition, grade level, special instructional needs of students, health and safety requirements, and facility utilization requirements of the New Jersey State Department of Education are essential factors to be considered in the assignment of students to classes.

General guidelines for class size are:
Grade Level Recommended Range for Class Size
Primary (grades K through 2) fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) students
Intermediate (grades 3 through 5) fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) students
Middle (grades 6 through 8) fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) students
Senior High (grades 9 through 12) fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) students
Special Education New Jersey program requirements
During the budget development process, the Superintendent or his/her designee shall provide the Board of Education with:
  • Current and projected student enrollment by school, by grade;

  • Recommendations for special facility needs of laboratory or studio courses, academic support programs and services, related arts programs, and/or other special courses of study;

  • Recommendations for the number of primary, intermediate, and middle school class sections by school, by grade;

  • Recommendations for the number of academic support and subject area teachers required to serve the number of primary, intermediate, and middle school class sections and course enrollment at the senior high level.
The Board of Education shall approve all teaching positions.

The Superintendent or his/her designee shall provide the Board of Education with monthly enrollment reports (i.e., district enrollment by school, by grade; elementary enrollment by program, by school, by grade, by enrollment category; and average class size for the elementary levels). Throughout the school year, he/she shall submit all recommendations for additional teaching positions or the elimination of teaching positions due to changes in student enrollment or program to the Board of Education for approval.
