The Board of Education believes that strong basic communication and computational skills are essential to educational development. The Morris School District shall implement a comprehensive basic skills improvement program to assist students at each level who have not yet attained proficiency on local and state assessments. This program shall:
- Provide equal educational opportunity for all students to develop proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics;
- Ensure instructional continuity from grade to grade and level to level; and
- Encourage alternative and/or innovative programs to meet the different interests and learning styles of a diverse student population.
All students shall be assessed annually for proficiency in language arts literacy and mathematics. Each pupil identified as having the need for preventive and/or remedial instruction shall participate in an academic support program designed to meet his/her identified needs in accordance with New Jersey statute and administrative code.
The Superintendent or his/her designee shall collaborate with parents and staff to develop guidelines for a comprehensive basic skills improvement program, including but not limited to:
- Programs and services;
- Multiple assessment criteria;
- Record keeping;
- Individualized instruction
- Home and school communication; and
- Program evaluation.
When a parent/guardian is dissatisfied with the pupil's program, he/she will be given an opportunity to discuss this dissatisfaction with appropriate staff.
