PREGNANT PUPILS

No pupil, whether married or unmarried, who is otherwise eligible to attend the schools of this district shall be denied an educational program solely because she is pregnant.

The Board of Education reserves the right to require as a pre-requisite for attendance in the regular classes of the schools and the co-curricular program of the schools that each pregnant pupil submit to periodic medical examinations by a physician at the intervals prescribed by that physician, and present to the superintendent her physician's written statement that such activity will not be injurious to her health nor jeopardize her pregnancy.

A pregnant pupil who does not wish to attend regular classes or is physically unable to do so during her pregnancy may be assigned to individual (home) instruction. A pupil who has received an alternate educational program for reasons associated with her pregnancy shall be readmitted to the regular school program upon her request and the written statement of a physician that she is physically fit to do so.

The Superintendent or his/her designee shall develop procedures for the implementation of this policy which shall include:
  1. Providing counseling services to help the pregnant pupil plan her future wisely;

  2. Cooperating with community resources to assist the pregnant pupil;

  3. Communicating with the parents/guardians of pregnant pupils, except that the request of any pregnant pupil age 18 or over that her parents/guardians not be informed shall be honored;

  4. Designating the medical inspector to receive the physician's statement regarding the examination and health of a pregnant pupil.
