The Board of Education believes that the school should help pupils learn to respect property and develop feelings of pride in community institutions.
The Board of Education charges each pupil with the responsibility of the proper care of school property and the school supplies and equipment entrusted to his/her use. In accordance with law, pupils who cause damage to school property shall be subject to disciplinary measures, and their parents/ guardians shall be financially liable for such damage.
The Board of Education authorizes the imposition of fines for the loss, damage, or defacement of textbooks, library books and other school property, and reserves the right to withhold a diploma from any pupil whose payment of such fine is in arrears.
The Board of Education may report to the appropriate authorities any pupil who does serious damage to school property or who does repeated damage.
The Superintendent shall develop procedures to implement this policy which include:
- Rules for the safekeeping and accounting of textbooks, library books and other school property;
- Preparation of a schedule of fines for lost or damage textbooks;
- A report to the Board of Education on vandalism, including the number and kind of incident, the cost of vandalism to the district, and such related facts and comments as the superintendent may wish to make.
