Pupils found to be in violation of the district’s smoking policies will be subject to the following:
- The parent/guardian will be notified;
- The student may be assigned to administrative detention or placed on in-school
suspension as determined by the building principal or his/her designee;
- Repeat offenders will be required to meet with a student assistance counselor or school
nurse. The counselor/nurse will discuss the potential harm smoking brings to personal
well-being and encourage the smoker to participate in a smoking cessation program or
related counseling sessions;
- Repetition of this offense will result in the student’s being suspended from school in
accordance with Board of Education policy.
Employees found to be in violation of the district’s smoking policies will be subject to the
following:
- The employee will be counseled by his/her immediate supervisor;
- Repeat offenders will be encouraged to participate in a smoking cessation program and a
warning will be placed in the employee’s folder;
- Repetition of this offense will result in placing a specific written reference in the
employee’s folder delineating how this action will have a negative effect on the
employee’s evaluation report. Repetition can also lead to progressive discipline and
termination. In addition, a formal complaint may be filed with the local department of
health and a mandatory fine will be pursued.
